Aims

The feasibility study HyperBike (Hybrid Pedal assisted Recuperating Bicycle) deals with a new concept for the assistance of cyclists with help of electric drives. Because of advancements of electric short-time power storages (double layer capacitor, highe power Li-Ion batteries) as well as propulsion systems (e.g. Switched Reluctance Machine (SRM), Permanently excited Synchronous Machines (PMSM), Double rotor concepts,...) we have the opportunity to rethink the technical solutions for the old idea of assisting cyclists with electric engines.
The study develops new concepts and applies some of the hybrid vehicle technology typical features for ultra-light two-wheelers: On the one hand new energy storage technology like double layer capacitors shall reduce weight of the drive-train and increase the cycle live and on the other hand the range of the electric vehicle in the stop and go traffic of modern cities shall be increased through recuperation.
The targets of the project HyperBike are:
  • Increase comfort for cyclists in stop&go traffic (accelerating without powering out)
  • No significant additional weight (that means the cyclist does not depend on the assisting electric drive)
  • Save braking without wear out (wet brakes do not have any influence)
  • Bicycle-like design (no optical ballast, modern design)
  • Integrated ABS (anti-lock braking system on the driving axle)
  • Integrated LED-light (security aspect)
  • High technical service life for all components
Changeable high-efficient additional energy storage or energy converters (fuel cells) shall create a modular concept, so even unathletic persons shall be able to climb mountain roads with HyperBike. Both - the desired power/weight ratio as well as the recuperating drive train with a minimised electrical engine are completely new grounds, so the proof of concept has to be made first. Proof of concept will be done by simulation of energy flows and by validating the cooling capacity of the minimised electrical engine in case of overload. In addition to the assessment of the technical concepts, the market acceptance and costs will be assessed too.

Do have considered or are considering to get an pedal assisted assisted electric bicycle or tricycle?

  I already own one.
Yes, I'm looking forward to buy one in the next months.
Yes, but I'm still searching for a better offer on the market.
No, I have not found a vehicle fitting my needs.
No, I don't want to pedal.
