Questions and Answers
Electric propulsion of bicycles is not new, what is your project about?
Having ridden electric assist bicycles for years, we know the benefits and the weaknesses of the various technologies. The aim for the Hyperbike feasibility study is to follow the development in the automotive sector, where technology has advanced tremendously and brought a propulsion concept with a good driveability at reasonable prices to success. The outcome of the feasibility study will be published after approval of the commissioning authority. Further going RTD projects are intended, which will take up the ideas and bring them to the market.
What are your expectation of the market size?
Some figures from Asia speak for themselves: In Guangzhou 100,000 residents ride electric two wheelers and there are 100 manufacturers (source The peninsula On-Line/Reuters 11/22/2006). This might give an impression that we speak about a feasible market. Dense European and Southern American populated areas have similar problems and citizens might see similar solutions for it.
Also in the EU we have an increase in powered two wheelers (2.9% increase 2003-2004 source EUROSTAT ). Air quality problems in European cities might led European politicians forcing low emission vehicles, in some cities two stroke compression ignition engines are already banned. Electric assist two wheelers will step in with new technology blasting the prejudices from the old days about electric propulsion.
Also the raise of the ageing cycling generation will rely on assistance in future. This will create a new segment for the bicycle industry.
Why there is no technical info about your ideas?
The project has just started, details with be discloses in close cooperation with the commissioning authority by end of 2007 latest.
What is your working method?
We have set up a kind of "chassis dynamometer" for bicycles where the battery endurance may be validated and the electrical parameter measured. But more interesting for the specification of the requirements is the "on road" measuring. An algorithm was developed to acquire bicycle acceleration and deceleration ramps with a high precision. Thus the loads for the electrical machinery may be better defined.
Last but not least the energy balance is subject to a in depth simulation where the concept will be validated.
