Paradigm Change in Propulsion Technology
The project was commissioned by the Austrian FFG in the A3PLUS funding programme initiated by the Austrian Ministry for Transport, Innovation and Technology. It is a small research initiative to be finalised in 2009. The main contractor is Energie- und Umweltconsulting, FGM has a subcontract.
Motivation
The demand for technological innovation stems out of several facts:
electric power trains do not offer plenty of heat like internal combustion engines
costs of secondary batteries do not scale very well with size e.g. a lot of costs may be saved by restricting installed kWh
ultralight vehicles do have a significant influence by the passengers weight on stability e.g. asymmetries are detrimental
Those paradigms of ICE (heat aplenty, energy storage costs very small, stable and heavy platform) no longer apply for smaller electric vehicles as for example complying to the European standard L6e.
Abstract
The project has now undertaken research to investigate the use of environmental energy, together with the use of waste energy and a sound internal heat management based on air. It also has simulated the shifting of the COG pre- and on-trip. Last but not least all thinkable possibilities for modularity of power trains were analysed.
Additionally hands on experience and own research has shown that weight per installed power should be lower for electric machines. This may be achieved by new ways of cooling but will require RTD to implement.
The project also has undertaken a DELPHI survey finding out the most feasible emerging solutions to be seen with ultra light battery electric vehicles.
